Symptoms, Decoded
The 10-speed and 6-speed behind these trucks each have complaints technicians see over and over. Match what you're feeling to what it usually means — and how urgent it is.
A light-throttle shudder around 40–70 mph is the classic torque-converter-clutch complaint on the 6R80 and 10R80. Caught early, it can sometimes be settled with a proper fluid service instead of converter work.
Get it checkedEngine rpm spiking on an upshift means a clutch is slipping before the next gear catches. Every flare wears it further.
Don't waitA widely reported 10R80 pattern. Sometimes it's calibration and adaptive-learning level; sometimes valve-body wear. Diagnosis says which.
Get it checkedA pause-then-thunk into Drive or Reverse points to low fluid or pressure loss — worth catching before it starts slipping under load.
Get it checkedOn 2009–2017 F-150s, a failing output-speed-sensor leadframe can mimic total transmission failure. It feels terminal — and is often an electrical repair, not a rebuild.
Get it checkedA leak starves the transmission. Low fluid, Texas heat, and a trailer is exactly how these units die young.
Stop drivingWhatever your Ford is doing, the diagnosis comes first — we scan it, road-test it, and put the real cause in a written estimate before any work begins.
Know Your Gearbox
Ford has used a handful of transmission families across its trucks and SUVs — and each has patterns technicians know on sight. Find yours.
| Your Ford | Transmission | Model years approximate | Known patterns |
|---|---|---|---|
| F-150 (newer) | 10R80 10-speed | 2017–present | Harsh or clunky shifts, shudder, shift flare |
| F-150 (previous gen) | 6R80 6-speed | 2009–2017 | Converter shudder, speed-sensor (leadframe) faults |
| Super Duty F-250 / F-350 | TorqShift — 5R110 · 6R140 · 10R140 | 2003–present | Towing heat, hard shifts, converter wear |
| Ranger | 10R80 10-speed | 2019–present | Same 10-speed patterns as the F-150 |
| Explorer | 10R60 10-speed or 6-speed, by year | 2011–present | Shudder, harsh or delayed shifts |
| Expedition & Lincoln Navigator | 10R80 10-speed | 2018–present | 10-speed patterns, plus heat from weight and towing |
| Mustang (automatic) | 10R80 or 6R80 | 2011–present | Same gearbox family as the trucks — we service these too |
Years are approximate and options varied — tell us your year and model when you call and we'll know exactly what's in it. Manual gearboxes and clutches are welcome too.
Trucks That Work
Nothing ages an F-150's transmission like a trailer in July. Heat breaks transmission fluid down, and a load makes the torque converter work its hardest right when the fluid protects it least. A tow package makes the truck willing — it doesn't make the gearbox immortal. Here's what keeps a working Ford alive.
Your Options
When a Ford transmission acts up, owners usually hear two very different answers. Here's the difference.

What we do
Either way it's a real investment — 6-month promotional financing through Snap Finance and Synchrony Car Care (on approved credit) can spread it into payments.
What to Expect
No mystery and no pressure — you'll know what's wrong and what it costs before we touch a wrench.
We pull the codes and drive the truck — how it shifts under real load tells us as much as the scanner does.
You get the actual cause and the real fix in writing — whether that's a fluid service, a sensor, a valve body, or a rebuild.
From software-level fixes to a full in-house rebuild with quality parts — matched to what your Ford actually needs.
We verify the fix under load and back the work with a solid warranty before you take it home.
Heavy Duty
The TorqShift behind a Power Stroke diesel lives a harder life than any half-ton gearbox — more torque, more weight, more heat. That's transmission work, and it's exactly our lane: we handle the transmission and drivetrain side of diesel trucks, the same specialty that covers Allison units on our main transmission repair page.
Right Page, Right Fix
Ford trucks share their symptoms with the rest of the driveline. If this page doesn't quite match, start here.
Our main transmission page covers the whole specialty: automatic, manual, CVT, diesel and Allison units, torque converters, and transfer cases — foreign and domestic.
Transmission Repair & RebuildOn trucks, a howl that rises with speed or a clunk on take-off is often the rear differential, not the transmission. Different gearset, different fix.
Differential RepairSnap Finance and Synchrony Car Care can split a major repair into payments on approved credit — see how both options work before you decide anything.
Financing OptionsOur Promise
Transmission work on a working truck is a real investment. Here's how we take the worry out of it.
On major transmission repair — if the truck won't move, we'll help get it to the shop.
Rebuilds leave with a solid warranty, and we honor eligible extended warranties.
The real cause and the real cost, in writing, before any work begins.

Read our Google reviews and a pattern shows up fast: truck transmissions, torque-converter work, warranties honored, and jobs that got done. Ford trucks have rolled through these bays since 1995 — and the reviews sound like it.
Good to Know
It depends on what actually failed — converter shudder, a sensor fault, a valve body, and a full rebuild are very different jobs, and the 10-speed and 6-speed price differently too. We diagnose first and put a written estimate in your hands before any work begins, so you're never pricing a guess.
It's in millions of trucks, and most run fine. That said, harsh shifting, shudder, and shift flare are widely documented owner complaints. Caught early, some of it resolves at the fluid or software level; a worn one needs real repair. A proper diagnosis tells you which truck you have.
That light-throttle shudder is the classic torque-converter-clutch complaint on both the 6R80 and 10R80. Caught at the first flutter, a proper fluid service can sometimes settle it; if the converter clutch is already damaged, the converter gets addressed with the repair. We road-test to confirm either way.
Yes — the TorqShift family (5R110, 6R140, 10R140) behind gas and Power Stroke Super Dutys is core work for us, and the same goes for Allison-equipped trucks. We handle the transmission and drivetrain side of diesel trucks; for engine work we'll point you to the right people.
Bring them — fleets are welcome, one truck or several. That includes E-Series vans, box trucks, and RV chassis. Call and we'll plan the work around your downtime.
Yes. The Mustang's automatics — the 6R80 and 10R80 — are the same family we service in the trucks, and we handle manual gearboxes and clutch repair as well.
